From Rapeseed Cake to Cupcake: A Sweet and Sustainable Adventure
The Teknologisk Institut (DTI), as part of the BRILIAN project, is turning agricultural by-products into valuable resources. In response to climate change and resource scarcity, agricultural residues like rapeseed cake are being recognized as a renewable, abundant, and sustainable feedstock🌾
The BRILIAN project is key to supporting rural communities across the EU in adopting bio-based economies, enhancing local supply chains, and reducing fossil fuel dependence. With rural areas covering 80% of the EU’s territory, these efforts are critical for promoting biodiversity, sustainability, and economic resilience.
DTI’s latest innovation? A method to extract proteins from rapeseed cake, transforming what was once a by-product into a valuable ingredient for various applications. Taking it a step further, the DTI team experimented by incorporating rapeseed cake protein into muffins—creating an innovative and sustainable take on a classic treat. The outcome shows how science and sustainability can align to produce something both practical and delicious.
However, the path to vertical integration of bio-based chains in rural areas is not without challenges. High capital requirements, complex technologies, and the need for new market channels are just a few of the barriers farmers face. BRILIAN supports rural stakeholders by addressing these hurdles, helping them convert agricultural by-products into valuable bio-products and creating cooperative business models that promote rural development and environmental sustainability.
As BRILIAN and DTI continue exploring innovative uses for rapeseed cake and other agricultural by-products, they are laying the groundwork for a climate-neutral, bio-based future.
Stay tuned for more!
