On May,14 2025 the entire BRILIAN team had the opportunity to meet in Vitoria for the M24 General Assembly and visit the spanish pilot facilities at Paturpat/Udapa. The following day, we all headed to the Food for Future fair to continue with the pilot presentation.

M24 General Assembly in Vitoria, Spain

A special day was celebrated with the BRILIAN consortium, holding our General Assembly for Month 24 at the Paturpat facilities, where the Spanish pilot is being developed. This gathering allowed us to review the progress of the project and align the next steps.

Topics on the table

  • Project Coordination: Presentation of results, review of lessons learned, and recommendations for the second semester.
  • Pilot Updates: A three-month review of the pilots, analyzing KPIs, next steps for validation activities, challenges, and contingency plans.
  • Stakeholder Dynamization: We discussed how to bring our solutions closer to the market and policymakers.

Tour of the PATURPAT facilities

In Spain, the pilot is hosted at Paturpat / Udapa facilities in Vitoria-Gasteiz, with partners Tecnopacking and AITIIP. The pilot plant extracts starch from potato by-products, transforming it into biodegradable thermoplastic (TPS) for flexible packaging and agricultural mulch.
We were able to see firsthand the production process and how they are managing the starch extraction process from potato by-products and wastewater at their facility.

Circular economy coming true!

Spanish pilot presentation in Food 4 Future event

Bilbao became the European capital of food tech with this event, bringing together over 100 companies and technology centers to accelerate the transition to sustainable, circular food systems through projects like BRILIAN.

The pilot was presented at the industry workshop “𝗨𝗽𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶-𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱: 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲-𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗿 𝗨𝗻𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺?” led by FOOD+i – Cluster Alimentario del Valle del Ebro and together with Paturpat Sociedad Cooperativa Ingredalia S.L., ALIMENTOS SANYGRAN S.L. y ODS Protein, we explored real cases of upcycling.
They all highlighted the importance of collaboration and transparency, education to break cultural barriers, and the need for clear frameworks and market validation. But also some barriers were brought to the table, as the cost and variability of by-products, challenges in scaling up technology and securing funding, and regulatory hurdles in upcycling within the agri-food sector.

The event were closed with and a presentation of the spanish pilot at the Demo Stage by Paturpat, AITIIP, and Tecnopacking.
