BRILIAN receives the Excellence Award in Biorefineries and Bioproducts at BioCircular Summit 2026
BRILIAN has been honoured with the Excellence Award in Biorefineries and Bioproducts at BioCircular Summit 2026, one of Spain’s leading events in the field of circular bioeconomy. The summit, held on 28 January in Madrid, is organised by Biocirc and Bioplat, two key platforms driving the development of bio-based solutions and fostering collaboration between industry, research organisations, and primary producers.
BioCircular Summit brings together companies, technology centres, public authorities, and European projects to showcase technological advances, explore collaboration opportunities, and accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable industrial model based on the valorisation of biological resources. Within this framework, the Excellence Awards recognise outstanding initiatives across several categories related to the bioeconomy, including biorefineries, bioproducts, technological innovation, and the development of new circular value chains.
In this edition, the BRILIAN project was recognised in the Biorefineries and Bioproducts category for its contribution to developing new value chains that transform agricultural by-products into high-value industrial materials and solutions, while strengthening the sustainability and competitiveness of the primary sector
Preliminary results validating the model’s potential
This recognition comes at a key stage of the project, as BRILIAN is already delivering tangible results through its pilots in Spain, Denmark, and Italy.
In the Spanish pilot, BRILIAN has successfully developed agricultural mulch bioplastics using an innovative formulation incorporating 40% thermoplastic starch, providing a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics.
In addition, the process achieved a 79% reduction in Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) in wastewater, a key environmental indicator, demonstrating the model’s potential to significantly reduce industrial environmental impact.
In Denmark, the project has validated sustainable bioadhesives derived from rapeseed cake protein, achieving up to 60% substitution of fossil-based phenols in resins used for wood composites, opening new industrial opportunities in sectors such as sustainable construction.
In Italy, trials have demonstrated the potential of cardoon cake as an ingredient in dairy cattle feed, contributing to improvements in both milk production and quality, while valorising agricultural by-products that previously had limited use.
This award reinforces BRILIAN’s positioning as a key initiative to accelerate the bioeconomy in Europe, demonstrating that agricultural by-products can be transformed into new industrial opportunities, generating added value in rural areas and strengthening the role of primary producers as active actors in bio-based value chains.
Brilian
The BRILIAN project has been conceived to support the adoption of sustainable and cooperative business models in rural areas, to incorporate agricultural by-products valorisation, seeking to increase and diversify primary producers’ income.
